Alone In Hawaii's post on the "aikido and bondage" thread made me think of this, and I didn't want to hijack Qatana's topic.
I've only had a few lovers who were also aikidoka, but they were as talented in bed as on the mat, and it leads me to wonder if being a dedicated and receptive training partner in Aikido translates into being a more sensitive and responsive sexual partner as well?
Think about it: both activities require energy, stamina, breath control, timing, and sensitivity to your partner's body and the way s/he responds to you.
Does anyone else have any ideas/experiences to support or detract from this theory?

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Sat, August 27, 2005 - 9:32 AMTwo of my favorite lovers of all time were martial artists, but neither of the aikidoka. What I found was that unlike most men, they didn't tend to "go away" while making love, but were very intently focussed in the moment.
I would very much like to explore this with another aikidoka, as well as the obvious power exchange potential, if I ever meet an attractive, unattached and over 17-year-old doka of interest...

Sat, August 27, 2005 - 5:49 PMYou asked: "Does anyone else have any ideas/experiences to support or detract from this theory?"
I have felt some tremendous energy from a few experienced aikidoka while off the mat. As we are married, there has been only tantalizing flirting. But I'll admit I have some great fantasies from those experiences!
The only way *I'm* going to find out if aikido makes for better sex partners is this: my husband does some serious training and gets past his early beginner status on the mat.
And that's not a good test... because he's already very sensitive and focused "off the mat."
Hmm.... maybe the similarities in energy and focus on the Big Mat and on the Little Mat are what make aikido so appealing to him and me! -

It hadn't occurred to me to think of it the other-way-round, but maybe you're onto something here, LinSu. Maybe having a certain kind of "energy and focus" in one's sexual life also makes one a particularly good Aikidoka?
I'm so fascinated by the interconnection and translation of abilities among all activities that involve any sort of "energy exchange" -- whether sex, martial arts, bondage, teaching, music, gardening... -

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Sun, August 28, 2005 - 8:21 AMHmmm, considering I have had sex exactly twice since I started training, and the fact that I am almost exclusively focussed on getting laid again before I die, and I train three times a week, and no male being I have ever trained aikido with has been either attractive or availble at the same time, and sometimes aikido even makes sense to me while sexuality rarely does, what was the question?
One of the guys I mentioned above is a classic Scorpio- completely unable to focus on more than one thing at a time, and when he was focussed on my body, yeah! But he also would forget some rather important things, like one day he forgot we were in a relationship, and that was that. -

I have to apologize. I laughed so hard I freaked out the cat, who flew into the air and practically knocked me off my chair.
I can't say inviting you to our dojo would improve your chances of finding an interesting male aikidoka off-the-mat partner; for one thing, he'd be geographically undesirable.
Unless, of course, one-night-stands and wild one-time weekends excite you...! -

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Sun, August 28, 2005 - 6:19 PMIm totally cracking up, period. Leave tribe for a few days and the new topics are all peaches!
as for me, yes, my best sexual and spiritual connections have been with female doka.
and most dubious, come to think of it. but its been years since anything dubious happened. Thank goodness. Training shouldnt be that hard.
any theories on that, philosopher?

In the Immortal words of Janis: Git it while you can!
A Whole Weekend sounds like a major committed relationship from my side of the block!

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Fri, September 9, 2005 - 12:30 PMI totally think there is a direct connection.
We discuss the allowing of different energies to go thur your body.
To learn to listen to your partner, blend and contribe.

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Sat, May 30, 2009 - 9:28 PMI do hope that there is a connection between the two, as I thoroughly enjoy them both (although it's been a bit of a dry spell. I've never had an aikidoka as a lover (yet), but I do agree with needing energy, stamina, timing, etc on both the big and little mats. There's that connection between nage and uke, that blend that is almost...sensuous. I remember feeling weird when I first realized how many techniques required me to get real close to my partners. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't one in particular I don't mind giving up my personal space to. Besides, there's only a slight difference between martial arts and marital arts. -

Re: aikido and sexual connection
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 3:16 AMIt would be nice to have a girllfriend who was also a fellow martial artist. I have a background in Aikido but the last few years I have been studying Ninjutsu mostly. -
