Re: Cool seminar coming up in E Bay next wkend
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 10:07 PMI should mention that
1. Park Slope was my "home dojo away from home" for yrs; Hal is a wonderfully gifted teacher
and
2. I no longer can train but plan on being there at least part of Saturday as an observer (and, if the dojocho, Kayla Feder, approves, will have some weapons bags to show) -

And another in the same dojo in August
Thu, July 19, 2007 - 2:49 PMAikido of Berkeley (Kayla Feder, 6th dan, California Aikido Association) will host a seminar with Mike Lasky (6th dan ASU) and Jim Sorrentino (5th dan ASU). The seminar dates are August 17 - 19, and the cost is $80. Please visit Aikido of Berkeley's website, www.aikidoofberkeley.com/index.php, for more information about registration, travel, and lodging.
Mike Lasky began his aikido training as a freshman at Oberlin College in 1975 under Frank Hreha-sensei. Later that year, Mitsugi Saotome-sensei arrived in the US, and Mike began studying with him. For many years, Mike was a mainstay at Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, DC, overseeing the teaching staff in Saotome-sensei's absence, and serving on the dojo's Board of Directors. Mike received his 6th dan in 2001. Mike's teaching is athletic and dynamic, and he has an encyclopedic memory of Saotome-sensei's weapons work. Mike is the Technical Advisor of Aikido of Northern Virginia.
Jim Sorrentino began his martial training in Uechi-ryu Karate-do under Robert Galeone-sensei in 1977. He holds a 3rd dan in that art. With Galeone-sensei's encouragement, Jim began his study of aikido in 1984 under Saotome-sensei. Jim received his 5th dan in aikido in 2005. He is the Chief Instructor of Aikido of Northern Virginia. -

Re: And another in the same dojo in August
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 5:03 PMSaturday's classes were wonderful to observe and i"m sure even more wonderful to have participated in. There was much laughter and people were really working on doing-as-shown rather than resorting to default patterns.
I cannot speak highly enough of the dojo culture Kayla Feder has created at Aikido of Berkeley. The combination of warm hospitality and reigi and the space itself just invite you in and make you want to be a part.
Hal is...Hal. He is one of those gifted instructors who combines the practical martial aspects of the art with the internal energy aspects without making it seem like a shotgun marriage or like a "woowoo" new age experience. As a self-described badger, I really respond to his groundedness. His memorable quote of the day, delivered with a broad grin:
"I don't worship uke. I worship the ground he walks on."
